The primary role of the Copy Editor is to help the Managing Editor prepare The Worcester Review for publication. The Worcester Review is the annual publication of the Worcester County Poetry Association. Most of the work of the Copy Editors is done independently; however, all editors are invited to attend twice-yearly staff meetings, usually held in January and June.

The Copy Editor timeline is as follows:

  • Late Summer: The Copy Editor receives a hardcopy of the first half of the poetry and fiction for the follow year’s edition for proofreading. The Copy Editor should return the corrected copy to the Managing Editor within 4-6 weeks.
  • Early February: The Copy Editor receives a hardcopy of the second half of the poetry and fiction for the upcoming issue for proofreading. The Copy Editor should return the corrected copy to the Managing Editor within 4-6 weeks.
  • Early March: The Copy Editor receives the feature section of the upcoming issue. The Copy Editor should return the corrected copy to the Managing Editor within 4-6 weeks.
  • Early June: The Copy Editor receives the master document of the entire manuscript of the upcoming issue, including front matter, the Table of Contents, all poetry and fiction, the feature section, the contest winners, and contributor bios for a final round of proofreading. The Copy Editor should return the corrected copy to the Managing Editor as quickly as possible, no later than the end of June.

The Copy Editor is expected to read and return documents to the Managing Editor in a timely manner, adhering to the deadlines set by the Managing Editor. The Worcester Review will reimburse postage costs associated with preparing the manuscript.

The Copy Editor also has the opportunity to represent The Worcester Review in the community at events such at stART on the Street, the Boston Books Festival, and the Massachusetts Poetry Festival, as well as WCPA events.

Additionally, the Copy Editor may be called upon to assist in the sequencing of selections to be included in The Worcester Review and to help with other proofreading tasks.

All members of The Worcester Review staff must maintain memberships in the WCPA.
